CNN MUST MAKE IT CLEAR AMANPOUR'S REMARKS ARE UNACCEPTABLE

We, the undersigned, find the recent comments made by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour deeply offensive and entirely unacceptable. Amanpour stated that Israeli hostages held by Hamas were “treated better than the average Gazan,” suggesting a despicable moral equivalence that diminished the suffering of the hostages who were held in inhumane conditions by the terror organization for 738 days.

While we acknowledge her personal apology, it is not enough.

CNN must make clear that remarks which trivialize the suffering of the Israeli people and the anguish of families whose loved ones were held hostage by Hamas terrorists for more than two years have no place in responsible journalism.

The world has seen the heartbreaking images of emaciated hostages reuniting with their families after 738 days of captivity in Hamas’ tunnels. These images are a painful reminder of unimaginable cruelty and resilience. To diminish such suffering with careless or equivocating language is indefensible.

If a journalist had made similar remarks about other communities, or excused harm inflicted on any other vulnerable group, the reaction would have been swift and unequivocal. The Jewish community deserves the same respect, empathy, and moral consistency.

We call on CNN to issue a public statement affirming that comments diminishing Jewish suffering or excusing acts of terror violate its standards and will not be tolerated. Anything less would be a failure of moral clarity and journalistic integrity.
